Description
Exploring the old house, she entered a room empty except for a large mirror propped up against the stone wall. Looking closer, she noticed that although the frame was caked with dust, the glass seemed freshly polished without so much as an age spot or a streak. She admired her reflection for a moment, before her attention was drawn to a yellowed piece of paper that had fallen to the floor. The writing was faded, but legible:
"The looking-glass is like the thief;
Beware those who would peer into it -
While it is watched it feigns innocence,
But once it has made you its mark
It will steal from you when your back is turned."
She went to call out for her friend to come see, but when her voice should have echoed through the halls there was only silence. She put her hand to her throat, then her face, and looked back into the mirror; her mouth had vanished, and she was completely mute. Unable to call for help, and terrified of taking her eyes off the mirror again in case they disappeared too, all she could do was wait in silence for her friend to come looking for her.
